<image:title>Blog - Looking beyond a diagnosis in health psychology - A diagnosis can tell us something about a person’s health</image:title>
<image:caption>Understanding their everyday life requires a wider conversation. Living with a health condition might involve changing relationships, disrupted routines, financial worries or uncertainty about the future. It can also involve friendship, pride, adaptation and moments of joy. Creative qualitative research offers ways to explore these experiences. A participant might photograph places where they feel supported. They could create a collage about changes in identity or draw a map showing how they navigate appointments, work and family life. These activities can help researchers ask more relevant questions. What makes an ordinary day manageable? Where does support break down? What does living well mean to this person? For health psychology, this creates opportunities to understand how health connects with emotions, relationships and the environments people live in. The benefit is a fuller account of the person’s life—one that can inform more thoughtful conversations about care and support.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Creative research: making space for different ways of expressing ourselves - How do you describe an experience when words feel too small?</image:title>
<image:caption>In psychology and health psychology, we often ask people to explain complex experiences through interviews. These conversations can be valuable. But talking is only one way to share what matters. Creative qualitative research can include drawing, photography, collage, objects, storytelling and journey mapping. These approaches give people different starting points for exploring their experiences. Someone might use a photograph to discuss belonging. A collage could open a conversation about identity after illness. A simple drawing might help someone explain the uncertainty of caring for a loved one. There is no need to be an artist. The value lies in what the creation means to the person who made it. Creative methods can make room for experiences that are difficult to put into words. Researchers must still ask, listen and check their understanding: an image does not explain itself. When we offer different ways to contribute, we create more opportunities to hear what matters.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Welcome to Beyond the Data - My journey into research My route into psychology and research hasn't necessarily been a conventional one. Coming into higher education later in life has given me a different perspective on what research can — and perhaps should — be. Over the past few years, I have become increasingly interested in lived experience research, particularly around health, neurological conditions, caring, neurodivergence, mental health and the psychosocial aspects of people's lives. But I've also become fascinated by how we conduct research. An interview or questionnaire might be the perfect way for one person to communicate their experience. For somebody else, it might not be. People communicate through stories, photographs, drawings, objects, memories, metaphors, movement and countless other ways. If we genuinely want to understand people's experiences, perhaps our research methods need to become flexible enough to accommodate that. That question has become an important part of my work.</image:title>
